hint o' the holidays

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Last night was the first night Nick & I were able to take some time to decorate. We're hosting a small gathering of close friends this weekend so it was time to get cracking! With some Christmas music in the background, and A LOT of laughs, we made some seriously cool bunting, and set up my baby tree. Above is a little hint of what it all looks like!

The bunting is made from strings of twine, some fabric pendants and paper pendants. I always seem to have random paper/fabric lying about my apartment, so we managed to scrounge up enough of these two patterns to fit Happy Christmas! I cut some letters out of paper and spray glued them onto the pendants. We then literally sewed the pendants on with needles and thread. We had some leftover ornaments, so Nick had the great idea of stringing them along the bunting as well. So fun! We took so many photos, and I definitely will post them later, along with photos from the party on saturday. {maybe even a Bunting How-To!}

what brought me here

Yesterday was my 26th birthday. At first thought, I freaked a little. The thought of no longer being in my early 20's, the thought of truly being an adult...I'm not ready, I can't be! But as I began thinking more and more, and reflecting on how much I've gone through, even in the last year...I am ready and excited to see what this year will bring! My day was complete with birthday singing from my work peeps {Thanks Melissa, Jacki, Sun & Julia!}, a lunch date with a bestie {thanks Amanda!}, a little pampering, a lovely chat with my mother, beautiful and thoughtful gifts from Nicholas that cut right through to my heart, an evening filled with a yummy dinner made by him too, tuns of laughter and love. I couldn't ask for any more...and I didn't want the day to end.

Today, on my first day of being 26, I am filled to the brim with love but also humbleness...how did I get so blessed to have such an amazing partner in crime who I met on HIS 26th birthday {hello Nicholas!}, loving family & such encouraging friends. It's some kind of wonderful!

Here's a cheers to a fantastic friday and great weekend. To all those in the U.S., happy thanksgiving!

My apologies for the lack of posts lately. Life has definitely been going at lightning speed, but I couldn't be more thankful for where I'm at! With my birthday happening this week, I always find myself reflecting on what's happened within the year, and what I've learned. Most people take New Year's to reflect and make resolutions, but for me, my birthday marks an accomplishment of another year. I have learned SO SO much in my age of 25...love, patience, selflessness, humility, encouragement, what it's like to really be a faithful and supporting woman, and a whole slew of other emotions & life lessons. At the risk of sounding like a woman in love, I have never felt more alive than I do right now! How blessed I am.

With all of that being said, lately I have also been trying to figure out what I want this blog to be, and am taking some time with that. It originally started as a scrapbook of design ideas and cool things, but has progressed into much more of a lifestyle blog...I hope to slowly incorporate more fun things into For Design's Sake and hope you'll bear with me. Nick and I have been doing a tun of cool projects lately and I really want to share them with you! I haven't been sure how to start it {whether it be a weekly thing, or just a progress report}, but am open and welcoming ideas and suggestions on what you would like to see & read!

Aside from a birthday celebration tonight, Nick & I don't really have any weekend plans...and it's just how we want it. After many weeks of going to and fro, we finally have made some down time. Oh to wake up on a saturday morning, make breakfast and just see what the day brings! Some of my favourite chill days include nothing but some good ol' tv, a classic book or even just a brisk walk out in the fall air...

Last night I had the awesome experience of seeing The Civil Wars live at The Phoenix, with my concert peeps. {hello to Amanda, Justin and Nicholas!} Post-show, we were all talking about how beautiful their voices sounded together and that they are just as amazing live, as they are on their album. It's always such a delight when that happens! Each song was meticulously played and every verse turned into poetry. Makes me wish I was that talented in music! If you ever get the chance to see them, you should, you will not be disappointed...

I have been in serious "deal with it" mode for a few weeks with so many things, and now I finally have an opportunity to take a deep breath and do a blog post. Yay! My life hasn't been filled with too many creative things to share lately, but I do have a few plans with the boy to make some seriously awesome crafts as Christmas presents...but I can't reveal those til later! I am though, hoping to photo document all of these things and more over the next little while! I want to share it all with you, and hopefully inspire you to create your own gifts for any occasion. It just feels better giving a homemade gift, doesn't it?

In the meantime, I wanted to share some snapshots of what's been going on in my life. Let's start with this past weekend. The handsome boy and I just took a roadtrip to see some of our mutual friends in Ottawa. {Also a shout-out to Jenna & Travis, who didn't make it in these photos...} The entire weekend was filled with non-stop laughter and well... A LOT of food! I love these guys SO much and couldn't have asked for a better first experience in Ottawa! Can't wait to go back!

I know this is a long time coming, and promised these photos ages ago, but time was lost somewhere in between September & October...and I can't seem to find it. I assisted Amanda a while back in the summer with this gorgeous and cozy wedding. What a blessing it was to be able to not only share the day with Mark & Emily, but capture some of the moments, so they can share them for years to come. Even though the day started off cold & blustery, my two best girlfriends, Amanda & Daniella and myself headed off to the little town of St. George to go apple picking. Starting off with a yummy breakfast and a catchup sesh, we then headed to the Orchard farm. The sun finally came out and it was a beautiful day filled with way too many apple snacking, silly shenanigans, and non-stop laughter. Thanks girls, for an awesome day. Fall has officially begun!

I love everything about the sea. How massive and undiscovered some parts are, how cool creatures live in the depths, and how beautiful the sound of waves are on the shoreline. The size of the seas really make you realize how small you are amongst this earth! I came across this really awesome wallpaper by Abigail Edwards today and it made me smile. How these simple lines and curves can so easily describe these massive wonders! How cool would this look in a nursery or just one big wall in your home studio? Her other illustrations are cute too...I LOVE the simplicity! Super sweet...

I can't illustrate people, so when I come across a really great one I tend to just be, flabbergasted and in awe. I especially love fashion illustrations, simple and grand strokes of crayon, sometimes with a hit of watercolour. How gorgeous are these Percy and Reed Dry Shampoo packages? I LOVE how simple the typography treatment is, with these awesome figures as the hero. I admit, I'm slightly jealous that their hair is so voluptuous, and maybe...just maybe, I'll have such large locks if I use this dry shampoo? Heehee...

It's already been a few days since returning from the cottage, but let me tell you, it was such an incredible time, and I am longing to be back there right now! Last Thursday, the crew packed up the car and we headed to the annual Labour day cottage location in Lambton Shores, Ontario. Our days were filled with some remaining summer sun, bonfires, epic s'mores {have you ever tried them with peanut butter cups instead of good ol' chocolate?}, tuns of jam sessions and games. I have to say though, the most memorable moments were made with the people that were surrounding me. Quiet, breezy nights on the beach with nothing in view but the stars, and a sense that this world truly is amazing.

A BIG thanks goes to Amanda & Justin who so warmingly invited all of the crew to their digs! Thanks guys! Love you both. xo

It's a new week. Hope you all had a lovely weekend! After a very busy weekend myself, shooting an adorable wedding with Amanda, I am having a hard time jumping into monday. I woke up feeling amazing and rejuvinated, but as the day progresses and is a short week here in Ontario, I can't help but dream of the cottage days about to arrive on thursday. I'm counting down til I can spend endless hours in front of a fire and in the company of friends!

Oh yea, and the wedding we shot!{which was located in Haliburton, amongst the trees, on a beautiful lake no less...swoon} Stay tuned for a sneak peek of those photos this week. I can't wait to download them and share the memories I captured! And I'm pretty sure that location got me all in the cottage mode...

As amazing and wonderful as life has been lately, it's also been super busy. What I wouldn't give to have some time off, drive up north and just sit on a dock and watch the sunrise...or the sunset. What decadence it would be to not know the time, to eat when you're hungry, sleep when you're tired and make some beautiful memories with friends. Next weekend is a long weekend here in Ontario, and I can't wait to pack up that car and head to Amanda's {& Justin's} cottage for a few days...pure sweetness.

I have lived in Toronto for over four years and still have never been to the Ex. But that all changed last night, when Nick's parents got us free passes. So we grabbed some of our peeps and headed on over, prepared to eat nothing but batter and have some good laughs. I haven't laughed so hard or smiled that much in a long time! {can you tell how happy I am by my ridiculous face I'm making in that photo? Oh dear...} I LOVED it! All the flashing lights, the ridiculously horrible music, the compulsion to run like an 8 year old high on sugar {Tiny Tom cinnamon sugar donuts to be exact}...it's all wonderful.

Also, one day I'd really love to pay to get in and take my trusty Nikon and just snap away and get some awesome photos. Super sweet!

look where it brought us

I am in awe as to how life can change so quickly and how it happens when you're least expecting it. How people can so easily jump in and out of your life, but how some remain steady throughout the years. How jobs can all of a sudden end, but another one lines up the next week, or teaches you patience and doesn't arrive for a year. So many different things happen and you can never plan for it. What an adventure this is!

I have been wanting to share some news with you for a little time now, but wanted to wait until I felt it right. Today, it is finally right! Earlier this year, I lost an important relationship in my life, and that was a big change. Since then, I have regained so much strength and such an excitement for what life can offer. With that said, last month, I got blindsided...but in the best way possible! A guy named Nick introduced himself at a friend's house. {on July 11th, his birthday no less!} We hit it off right away and we've been hangin' ever since. Still now I am just in this crazy daze of how someone can just enter your life, your paths just happen to cross when you're not looking, and how amazing it can be. Not only do Nick and I have regular every day, fun things in common, {he too, is a graphic designer} but in terms of morals and beliefs, we seriously hit it off. All of this is still new, but with every passing day I am reassured that this guy is gonna make some serious awesome in my life...and I hope I do the same for him!

Lovelies! I apologize for the lack of posts lately. Let's just say some exciting personal things are happening in my life, and I've been crazy busy! It's the summer and inevitably you try and catch all the nice days to be outside, the weekends are filled with weddings and cold beers on patios. What a season, right? Today I'm off to a wedding of a good friend and her fiance. They've been dating for 12 years!!!! I can't wait to celebrate their big day with them, and all my friends.

Toe in toe with my concert buddy {hey Amanda!} we eagerly made our way through the VIP entrance last night of the Sound Academy to hear none other than Bon Iver live in concert. All I have to say is...EPIC. I love Bon Iver, but now have an even more profound respect for them. The ensemble of 9 {blasting their trumpets, drums, violins, keys and a whole lot more} hit every note and timing perfectly. It was pure genius.

Everywhere I go I have been seeing anchors. Growing up with a seaside near by, I have always loved nautical things like old maps, ships, collecting seashells after the tide has gone out, and the idea of buried treasure. {who doesn't love a good pirate story?} I also love what an anchor symbolizes...stability, strength and the ability to withstand rolling waves and stormy seas...just plain awesome.

I can't help but catch myself dreaming of being in another world today...{it's a whopping 49 degrees outside!} With that being said, I would like to introduce you to some of Adam Makarenko's work. I saw some of his photos last year through a friend {Thanks Evan!} and came across another article featuring him today. These magical worlds and scenes he creates by carefully and gently building dioramas first and then lighting and shooting them all. Each of these scenes tells a story and I'm just amazed at how beautiful they are. Sometimes other people's creativity blows me away...

I haven't worn a watch in years. I don't think I've ever really found one that I really have liked and have a bit of a problem on what wrist to wear it on. Yes, I'm left-handed, but I mouse at work with my right hand. It's quite the situation... For a few years though, I've been debating between a gold or silver man's style watch. But then when I recently saw that tortoise shell is coming back, I was jumping for joy! Tortoise shell will win me over above silver and gold any day! I've been searching out a few different brands but still not sure which one I should choose. I like the bigger watch styles but with not so much bling...I'm a simple kind of girl.

Hello lovelies! Wow, the weekend snuck up so fast this week. I don't have too many plans, welcoming some of my family home from their BC road trip tonight and just chilling and spending time with them tomorrow before they fly back to New Brunswick and Boston...I can't wait to see them and hear all their stories. What an adventure they must have had!

I'm a pretty neutral girl. I like my whites, creams, browns & greys, and will never tire of them. Though, since this year the neon is coming back, I feel like I should embrace the bright colour every once in a while. I must not be afraid! Love the mix of whites with royal blues or a neon yellow. I love finding new music. There's just something about listening to new notes and chords that are put together so beautifully, in a way you've never heard before. A few months ago, I came across The Civil Wars. At first, I thought it was too folky, but after listening to it a few times, I now have to say it's one of my favourite albums. The lyrics are gorgeous and have touched my heart in many ways over the past little while, especially the one I included above, To Whom It May Concern.

Lately I've been lingering over the written word. I feel that when people are having hard times in their life, as much as a good comedic movie can make you laugh, more often than not, words and stories have such impact and tend to stay with you for a lifetime. No matter if it's a self-help book or just a chick-lit, a book seems a more intimate way to feel and experience a life you might dream of. I know I have about 3 or 4 books on the go. That's a bit too much for me usually, but somehow right now, I'm finding comfort in beautifully written sentences and ideas that spark inspiration and possibility...

I conquered my first camping trip! With many wonderful memories spilling out from my head and heart, this post is dedicated to the awesome people I went with. The weather, scenery and company was perfect and couldn't have asked for a better first camping experience. We canoed through beautiful waters, ate way too much good food, shared talks by the campfire and laughed til our stomach's hurt. These are the best things in life...I just know it.

Today is like a friday for me! I've got an extra long weekend starting tomorrow, and you'll never guess where I'm going. I'm going on my very first EVER camping trip. Yup, some butterflies are present in my stomach, but I know it's going to be such an awesome time. I'm not a super girly girl...I like being outside, hiking, swimming and the lingering smell of a campfire on your favourite sweater. It's going to be great. As much as I enjoy my big city, I like having weekends away where the air is silent and breezy and you can actually see the stars in the sky. Oh and really, who doesn't like s'mores?!

For all of you who are in Canada, Happy Canada Day weekend! For all of the rest of you, enjoy the rest of the week & weekend too. Everyone should light some fireworks, no matter where you are!

This weekend I got to be a part of something really cool. On Saturday, for the second year in a row, The Canadian Design Blogger Meetup got together again. I wasn't able to make it last year, but was so thrilled to be able to join in on the fun this year. A big cheers goes out to my awesome friend Daniella of Dress, Design, Decor, and Vie from Verdigris Vie who did an immense amount of planning and organizing to make it all happen. What an event it was! From the location at Brassaii, to the yummy appetizers, {my favourite still, has got to be the goat cheese fritters and the tiny grilled cheese sammies!} this was a great way to network with fellow bloggers in Canada and just have some fun!

Not only was this event fun, but for me, I left a winner! I still can't believe it. {Ok, so I've never really won anything in my life...} The girls had a bunch of different draws set up from Ikea gift cards, design books, taps & shower heads and the list goes on from all the sponsors. My name was chosen for these beautiful Crate & Barrel Pillows! They go perfectly with my apartment decor, and who doesn't love a new set of pillows for a new season?

All in all a fabulous night, and I can't wait to check out all the different blogs from the women I met there. 'Til next year ladies!

Here's a snapshot of my bike {suitably named Dexter "Danger" Hampton, he's British after all} from the first ride of the summer. One of my favourite places to go in the summer is the island. I sometimes just need a break from the city, and that's the perfect spot to whisk off to. I prefer Ward's Island, as that's where all the island people live or have cottages and it's somewhat quieter than Centre Island. Though the boardwalk in between those is a beautiful ride! In attempts to keep myself busy and entertained, this adventure was really nice and ended with some relaxing and reading on the beach before heading back into the city...

I came across this post on Design*Sponge yesterday and my jaw dropped. This house, of Caitlin Van Horn of Roost {gorgeous blog btw} is basically my dream home wrapped up into a blog post. The mix of new and old, the colour palette, the textures of the wood, metal, marble...my dream come true! The bonus to this is all that natural light...gotta LOVE that natural light. It just makes everything look so much better!

one happy day

I had a great privilege recently to work with a fantastic couple and design their wedding stationery. Hilary & Jordan met while tree planting one year and it blossomed into a beautiful love for one another. Going with the idea on how they met, the couple wanted something laid back but also classic, and that represented the growth in their relationship. I created a colour palette of ivory, white, black and concrete/malt grey, and paired a tree motif with strong and timeless typography.

Along with the invites & rsvp cards to design, I got to work with an amazing calligrapher, Shira Leuchter. A jack-of-all-things creative, Shira does fantastic calligraphy and made all my beautiful envelope dreams come true! I am so thankful the overall idea came together and that not only myself & Shira love the package, but first and most importantly, that the couple loves it and feels it represents them.

I feel so blessed to have met this couple and send them the best wishes as they start this new part of their life together!

Happy Mother's Day! What a gorgeous day it is in the city, and I hope wherever you are, if it's sunny, you are out celebrating today with your mother. Unfortunately, I am not with my mom today, but thinking of her dearly and am sending her all the love!

I have been out all day, just enjoying the sunshine. This morning I started at a beautiful cafe with a trusty book and some breakfast and then made my way up to what is always a favourite of mine...the book store! Ah, the smell of books and paper just brightens my mood even more! Throughout my walks today, I see families of all kinds out walking and laughing. These are the days I just love the city and all it has to offer.

I am so glad that Friday finally arrived. A bit of a long week for me but thankful it's come to an end! Even though it's going to be a bit of a hectic weekend, starting to pack and tying up loose ends before I go away, I'm definitely making sure to give myself some serene and calm moments to collect my thoughts. I'm thinking either a coffee and a good book in silence at home, or hot yoga...Hmmm...

I have a little spring in my step today. I'm donning some new specs, brand new {and should I say super-sleek} iphone, and also a pair of flats that make my feet sing with comfort! {ok, that's a bit extreme, but seriously, they're comfy, and that's coming from someone with tiny and wide feet!} Oh, did I mention it's sunny and bright outside too? Over the past few weeks it's been gloom and doom in my neck of the woods but I'm feeling a little bit of spirit today! With my vacation to Paris only a week away, I'm getting very excited!

Speaking of Paris, I came across these beauties today from the new issue of Elle France. I might just be a little risky when I'm there and sport some bright lipstick like that luscious pink! I love the mix of royal blues and bright magentas. Mix it up with some feminine lace or embroidery and you've got the perfect summer combination!

I couldn't get enough of The Royal Wedding excitement all weekend. I caught myself watching everything from repeats of the big day {on numerous channels} to biographies on Will & Kate and their relationship, and even fun facts online about the Royal Family altogether. I have never really thought much about it before. Yes, I remember the exact day when Princess Di was killed and watching the funeral, but haven't thought too much about the Royal Family in years...I like how this big event brought together the Commonwealth and the world, even if just for one day!

I missed the balcony kiss due to the fact that the subway system was running slow this morning, {BAH!} but that doesn't stop me from live streaming the Royal Wedding at work! I will have this baby going until it's all over. What an awesome historical even to wake up to this morning. Though I didn't get up at 3, my 6am alarm was good enough for me to catch the main event, and I couldn't stop smiling the entire time! I loved Kate's dress and OH the hats! I also love to secretly pretend I know what they're whispering to each other as they walk down that long aisle...

I have heard so much about the Royal Wedding lately and it's driving me crazy! I am very excited to watch it, but every other television channel has all things Royal on it, it's insanity! I missed the last epic Diana wedding by just a few years, and am thrilled I am around for this one {and to see the dress and all out fashion!}. The 3am start however? Not a big fan of that!

Out of every palette, Easter colours - I have loved forever. Give me sea foam green any day! Butter yellow and lilac? Heck, yes. My favourite children's books are Peter Rabbit, so this may not surprise you that the animals associated with Easter like little ducks & bunnies all running around on packaging and posters, love...love...LOVE! {did you see the little finger puppets above?! I love all grain-like, warm breakfast cereals. Oatmeal, oat bran, buckwheat...you name it, I love it! So when I saw this post on Joy the Baker, it sparked many ideas. Sometimes on weekends when I don't have time to get groceries, I scrounge my fridge and cupboards to see what I can manage to pull together for breakfast. This morning, with quinoa in mind, I realized I has some coconut, cinnamon dusted pecans {amazing, btw!} and apples that I could saute up in butter and cinnamon. Oh yea...and don't forget the maple syrup. It was awesome! Not quite the same as Joy made, but I figure, that's the fun in cooking sometimes. With quinoa, you could experiment and have so many different variations, depending on the season and what's in your cupboards. Here's my version if you're curious:

Breakfast Quinoa {or I like to call Breakfast of Champs}

1 cup of quinoa {you can make it with red, yellow etc.}

2 cups of water

pinch of salt

1 whole apple, chopped

1 tsp butter to sauté with

3 tablespoons of cinnamon-dusted pecans

1 tsp nutmeg

cinnamon {to taste}

coconut {to taste}

maple syrup {to taste}

Rinse dry quinoa. Place quinoa, salt, and water in a medium pot. Bring to a boil over medium heat. While quinoa is boiling, add butter to small saute pan. Once butter starts to simmer, place apples in and dust with cinnamon. On low-medium heat, saute apples until soft. Simmer the quinoa until all of the water is absorbed. Stir occasionally. Turn off element and allow quinoa to cool slightly.

After quinoa has cooled slightly, sprinkle in 1 tsp of nutmeg, and 1 tsp of cinnamon and stir. Add in sautéed apples. Spoon into any size bowl you like. Sprinkle with crushed pecans, coconut and maple syrup to your liking! Enjoy!

Note: You could toast the coconut, I just got lazy! If you'd like to, follow Joy's instructions I've copied here.

*Place a rack in the center of the oven and preheat to 375 degrees F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and spread coconut in a single layer across the sheet. Toast the coconut. Keep a close eye on the coconut, it could burn quickly. Coconut will be browned and fragrant after about 6 minutes. Remove from the oven and place in a small bowl.

Ahhh...It's finally the weekend! I got myself some extra sleep this morning and feel refreshed and ready to enjoy the next few days. Even though it's gloomy and rainy out, it won't stop me from having some fun, and dreaming about long, sunny summer days! I'm off to get ready to go to one of my favourite stores in Toronto. The Paper Place! I'm finishing up a wedding invite package for a client, and am getting very excited to finally see it printed. So I just have to get the paper and envelopes, and find something glamorous to wrap around each printed package...Can't wait to show you all when it's finished!

Why hello there, and happy weekend! Right now I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my parents, and my aunt to come visit me for a great day in the city. I'm so excited because my aunt has never come to visit us out of all the many years we've lived in Ontario! I also wanted to make it a little special by having a few sweet treats to welcome them, including some strawberries and apple cinnamon & coconut muffins, made fresh by yours truly! {let me know if you're interested in the recipe!} What a great way to spend a saturday, and I hope yours is just as sweet!

It's friday! I have been oh-so-absent this week on here. I can't believe it, but let's just add it up to stress and a demanding schedule. In fact, the next few weeks are looking just as crazy, so bear with me! I keep telling myself, after this is all over, it's only days before I go on vacation for 2 whole weeks! Lately I have been addicted to blood oranges, or pretty much anything citrus. Winter has seemed to last extra-long this year, so it's probably some desperate attempt to fight off any type of cold coming my way! That sweet but tangy flavour that bursts in my mouth, is so satisfying, and honestly could potentially be better than candy! {and anyone that knows me..knows that's a HUGE statement...I LURVS my candy!} So when I spotted this citrus salad from My New Roots, I got all giddy. That's it, I'm going to the market tomorrow morning and making this for sure. Hope you're all having a bright weekend!

Happy Spring everyone! Wow, that seemed to take forever to finally arrive, but it's here and I couldn't be happier! Yesterday as I was out for a run, I even saw my first robin sitting in the grass! Two friends went to see Red Riding Hood. My good friend Daniella and I managed to make it over to the theatre last night {and get awesome seats btw} to see the new movie by the Twilight director. Full of sweeping landscape pans and gut-wrenching sexual tension, this movie kept us on our toes! The costumes were gorgeous, and who doesn't love Amanda Seyfried?

I know that throughout the world, devastation happens every day. As I get older, sometimes I feel like these affect me more than ever, and this morning when I heard about the earthquake and tsunami hitting Japan, and warnings in 53 other nations including Canada, I couldn't help but be glued to the screen, watching that water just sweep across miles of land, hitting everything in it's path. I feel so helpless! I am thankful I am here in Ontario but hope I can find some way to help...

I think it's probably a coincidence, but ever since I coloured my hair darker last weekend, I've been feeling a little darker in the mood. I think it's just the fact that spring is supposed to be around the corner, yet it feels no where in sight. As I look out my office window it's foggy and grey, and completely a blanket of snow, and these are the days I should have stayed in bed, getting lost in a novel and listening to some awesome tunage! I know that sounds a bit lonely, but sometimes on those types of days it's the best thing ever, and a lot of times where I come up with the best creative ideas, just lounging around and letting my thoughts wander...

Monday has returned.I had a fantastic weekend, busy as it was, catching up with tuns of girlfriends and want to thank all of them for making it possible! Even though I'm a little tired, I'm still on a little buzz from all the excitement. Speaking of excitement, when I saw the new photos for Zara's march Look Book, I couldn't help but be a little giddy...I am absolutely loving the colour mix, especially for spring. I am determined to pull off a bright pink lip and pair it with some creams, bright blues and forest greens....my dream palette! Wouldn't this outfit be perfect roaming the streets of Paris? Oui, perfect!

Well hello weekend! I have no idea how it happened, but I have a crazy busy weekend planned. I usually like to keep my weekends pretty chill, a meet-up with a friend here, a little project there, but this weekend I have a few things booked every day. Don't be fooled though, it's all very fun stuff! Last night I had a much needed vino catchup with a friend, and that started it all off perfectly. Today will consist of some freelance research, {paper store, here I come} an appointment at the hair salon for a few hours, and then I have some lovely girls staying over til sunday. {dinner, drinks, manicures, and much much more!} THEN, I have a dinner party on sunday night with some more lovely ladies.

Phew! With that all being said, I should probably hop to it all, so I leave you with some words of wisdom today, and hope it inspires you to be open to any possibility that comes along your way these next few days. Cheers!

March 1st, how I adore you! Yes, it's a little cold, but the sun is shining and we are well on our way to spring! It occurred to me the other day just how much Canadians talk about weather...and it made me laugh. How I even sometimes revolve my day around whether it's sunny and warm out or not. Does anyone else feel this way? Well crazy or not, I'm going to take a nice walk at lunch and enjoy every minute of it! It snowed all day here in the city. I stayed in, all cozy in my apartment, and loved it! This grey day included numerous cups of hot coffee, painting my nails {a matte grey of course}, a little bit of design, a nourishing hair mask and a heaping bowl of home made chili. I might even get lost in the novel I'm reading tonight...Decadent!

Saturday has arrived! I am actually really happy, I don't have many plans for this weekend, just the usual cleaning up, groceries and relaxing! I have a little bit of freelance work to do, but on weekends like this I like to make it as light as possible and perhaps start out with some awesome music and coffee which then leads into the real work. The subway service is also down today in the city in certain areas, so all the more reason to stay close to home. These are the simplistic weekends I love! Also, don't you enjoy the outfits above? Just what I like, basics that turn into classics and can wear them together endlessly...

Three cheers for long weekends! {It's a holiday here in Canada tomorrow.} This weekend is extra special for me, as it's my mom's birthday tomorrow, and I am baking her a cake! My mom is usually the one that makes ALL the cakes for every birthday, and this year I thought I would do the honours. So on the cooling racks right now are two layers of good lookin' chocolate cake. I can't wait for her to take the first bite! {complete with my special ingredient in the icing...cherry flavoured brandy, YUM!}

The holiday for us is considered Family Day, and I hope that all of you celebrate a little with your family, and that long or short, your weekend is fantastic!

In attempts to make this a lovely weekend despite the cold and snow, my first treat was as soon as I woke up this morning. Home made lemon & blueberry french toast! It was YUM! The thing I love about french toast, is that it's so easy to make, and the combinations are endless. Pair it with some yummy coffee and that brightened my morning immediately!

Lots of things to do today, but can't complain, they're all lovely and girly things, like wedding invite designs for a client, and baking some V-day cookies! Hope you all have a fantastic saturday...

Ok, so I am totally over winter. Why does it have to tease us with a warmer day, then BAM! Freezing cold and bitter...I definitely feel like it has been a long winter this year, but maybe it's just because I am such a summer weather person. I look in my closet every morning, tired of wearing sweaters and long for the days of slipping into a comfy dress and sandals. I also think it's affecting my design and inspiration. I don't feel as motivated or have as many ideas popping into my head like I normally do. Yes, I am healthy, I eat healthy and work out every week, but I think the cold is getting to my brain! Does anyone else out there feel this way?

Most of southern Ontario is in the middle of a major snow storm, and here I am sitting at work looking out the window. Ho hum... These are the times that I am SO over winter, and just want spring to come. Just like the photos above, I dream of the sun shining later into the evening and a warm breeze. I just came back from a fantastic brunch with 2 girlfriends, and can I just say that whoever thought of brunch was a genius?! The excuse to sleep in a little bit longer than usual and then treat yourself to not only a little mimosa or a rich espresso, but also to the company of some awesome people. In celebration of Robbie Burns Day, {and a goodbye party for a colleague} we all headed to The Ballroom for some old-school bowling. Donning our kilts and tartan shirts, we bowled, danced and drank the night away with whiskey. What a night it was! The Ballroom is a brand new alley in Toronto, and alleys are rare here in the city, so it was great to finally feel like bowling was cool again, even if it was just for one night...

PMS Cookie anyone? {Pun intended!}I spotted these over at Design*Sponge this morning and it couldn't have come at a better time of the month. HeeHee! I love anything with a Pantone and these definitely take the cake. All you designers out there, I bet you also noticed the neat Pantone Tin they come in...which you can find at A+R, in various colours. They would look perfect at my desk space...*Sigh...

As much as I like to think I am a super girly girl, {what girl doesn't love getting a manicure or her makeup done?} a lot of times I am attracted to men's style more than women's. Sure, I love a frilly dress, but pair it with men's style oxfords and I am happy as a clam! I love houndstooth patterns, dark caramel club chairs, large watch faces and the thought of a stiff drink in the mid-afternoon...Men's style is classic and I don't think will ever fade, so I say go pick up a perfectly ironed dress shirt and tuck it into a cute little skirt. You can't go wrong?

washes, stains & tears of love

For a few months now I have been noticing a definite trend in stains and watercolour washes. I have always used light washes of watercolour in any illustrations that I do, as I love that feeling of transparency and wistfulness! With Valentine's day coming closer and closer I can't help but be inspired by all of this. Why not add a little stain to your cheeks and lips before you go out the door tomorrow, or quickly brush a little watercolour heart on a little ripped piece of paper and write a note to the one you love. I promise it'll make your day!

The outdoors is deceiving today, and though the sun was bright, the wind chill had quite the day! For the most part it has been a relaxing with a few outings here and there, and am happy now to be inside and cozy. My favourite part? Sipping on an Americano while chatting with the family...

Dear spring...please come soon. The weather outside definitely does not scream spring today, as it's been snowing all night and just won't stop today, but spotting this photo shoot of Michelle Williams gave me hope that spring is certainly upon us...I can just feel it! Her outfits are gorgeous, and make me so happy! Though I would never make myself that blonde, it definitely inspires some outfits for the upcoming season. I bought a citrus green belt last year and just haven't been able to wear it yet, but now I'm thinking it would be perfect on my waist with a light cream, girly dress!

Yes, I'm a girl who loves weddings. I have yet to be in my own, but I think even after that I will still love the idea of putting together pieces of the couples personalities and fitting them perfectly together on a beautiful day. My friend Melissa showed me Three Nails Photography today, and I'm hooked. Not only is it wedding related, but the photography itself and people in them are beautiful. I love the antique tone and lighting to the photos, and the attention to detail but without it being stuffy. Let's face it, so I love everything on this blog! Also, I'm pretty sure the bride above has my dream dress on (minus the bow.) It has pockets! Definitely inspirational on this snowy thursday...

Happy 2011 to all my readers out there! With a new year, comes resolutions and a hope for the best. I am not a person that necessarily makes resolutions, but I like to believe that this next year will be better than 2010. Last year was a tough one for me, a lot of challenges jumped onto my path, yet I came out changed, and hopefully for the better. This year I'd like to take a step back, enjoy some simplistic moments with friends and family and reclaim some personal time. But it's so much easier said than done, and that's where the challenge lies.

As most of you know, I have been trying to make Short & Sweet Paperie grow and prosper. I still very much want that, but taking a step back means rethinking and really honing in on the details. I am taking this year to evolve S&S and really make it a strong brand for years to come. I get so excited at the thought of new exciting things and am learning that sometimes you really need to take some time to evolve and idea and make it grow. This is where you come in! I love hearing your ideas and opinions, and may sometimes use this blog to ask you those questions. I hope that's ok! FDS has also evolved so much over the passed few years and hopefully has turned into something that you all love to read, whether you need a break from work or need some inspiration. I will continue in making it the best blog it can be!

I hope you have all had a much-needed break over the passed few weeks and are able to start the new year fresh and ready to rock 2011!

Today I am relaxing and spending time with my family. Oh, but I have to get my presents wrapped! A tradition for my sister and I do wrap them together, spending time laughing hysterically at the tags we write, and eating lots of yummy baked goods. More to come tomorrow. Cheers and enjoy!

I finally had a few moments to put together some photos from my birthday trip with my two awesome girlfriends, Amanda & Anna to Quebec. {hey girls!} This trip definitely got us in the Christmas spirit a little early, with a tun of snow starting with our plane landing, complete with snow plough trailing beside it. Let's just say, none of us were really prepared for that and we all ended up having to buy some serious snow boots! Nonetheless, it was an amazing trip and SO relaxing. All we did was eat yummy, yummy food {mostly crepes and pastries}, espresso and lattés galore. We also didn't stop laughing! The little cobblestone streets and old shops in Quebec were beautiful and I couldn't get enough, and this was definitely a trip to remember...thanks so much to both of you!

I have literally had Christmas songs in my head for days. It might be that I am so busy, that I feel the constant need to push the Christmas spirit from my head into my heart...OR there's just those sweet tunes everywhere I go. Regardless, it makes me feel like a kid again! But for a moment, I need to relax and remember the reason for this season. It's not the crazy bustling about or the presents galore, but the time spent with family and the memories made. Take a time out, make yourself a hot beverage, watch this super cool video and relax!

I know that there's a little bit of something difficult in every job, but sometimes being in the creative industry pushes you over the edge emotionally, and you need to be reminded of why you do this every day.
